Here's Why Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent Sold Their LA Home for a Small NYC Apartment

The couple gave AD a tour of their apartment for its May Issue.

There's no doubt that Drake's insane Toronto mansion stole the show in the May issue of Architectural Digest. But that's not the only design home-run in the issue: AD also visits designer couple Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent of TLC's Nate & Jeremiah By Design. The couple recently purchased a townhouse in the West Village neighborhood of New York City, a major downsize from their former Los Angeles home.

To catch you up, Berkus and Brent had purchased a spacious 1920’s Spanish Colonial home in LA back in 2017. A huge oak tree in the front yard drew the couple in to this grand and spacious abode. "We pictured Poppy, and eventually the rest of our family, playing under that tree, and we thought this was a place we could put down roots," Brent told AD at the time. Fast forward almost three years later and the couple has returned to New York City with their kids Poppy, 5, and Oskar, 2, in tow. "One thing I can promise you is that I will never again tell a publication that a house is my ‘forever home,'" Berkus quips in the story. "We shan’t be saying that again," Brent adds.

The couple, whose romance began in New York, missed the energy and diversity of the Big Apple, they say. They estimated that Poppy talked to the same 11 people every day in Los Angeles, and they wanted her to have a bigger circle. In order to make the move work, though, the men had to really decide which of their belongings actually sparked joy. "Our old living room had 30 pieces of furniture," Berkus says. "This one has six! But what you see is the best that we’ve got."

They settled on a 3,400-square-foot townhouse built in 1899, which had recently been gutted. The stripped-down space was left feeling "sterile," as the couple describes it. "Our job was going to be to give it some soul again," says Brent. To add some flair to their space, they built a massive two-story bookshelf that takes over an entire wall—a stylish, yet space efficient way to display the family's mementos. How else did they make this townhouse their own? You can catch Berkus and Brent's home tour with AD below.
